Masuma expands its brake system component lineup with new brake pad wear sensors. The range includes external electronic wear sensors installed in the brake caliper to monitor remaining brake pad thickness.
Brake pad wear sensors are widely used in modern vehicles, especially European models. They alert the driver to critical pad wear before the friction material is completely worn out and the brake discs become damaged.
WHEN TO REPLACE BRAKE PAD WEAR SENSORS
Brake pad wear sensors operate under harsh conditions, including high temperatures, road chemicals, and brake dust exposure. Over time, they may fail due to several common causes:
- mechanical damage from stones or ice;
- broken wiring at bending points;
- contact corrosion caused by moisture;
- destruction of the sensing element after activation.
A faulty sensor may cause a constant brake wear warning light on the dashboard or, conversely, fail to signal when the brake pads are fully worn. In some vehicles, the system may also trigger an open-circuit fault code.
Wear sensors are usually replaced after failure. However, experienced mechanics often recommend replacing them preventively together with the brake pads — especially after the sensor has been activated and the sensing element has contacted the brake disc.
MASUMA BRAKE PAD WEAR SENSORS

The Masuma range includes two types of electronic brake pad wear sensors.
- Single-stage sensors operate using a simple electrical circuit interruption principle. While the brake pad thickness remains sufficient, the circuit stays closed. Once the friction material wears down to a critical level, the circuit breaks and the brake wear warning indicator appears on the dashboard. This is a simple and reliable design widely used in European vehicles.
- Two-stage sensors operate using a resistance-changing principle and provide two warning levels. The first signal is a preliminary warning indicated by a yellow dashboard light showing upcoming brake pad wear. The second signal is the main warning: as wear continues, a red indicator illuminates to signal immediate brake pad replacement.
The current Masuma lineup includes brake pad wear sensors for European vehicles, including AUDI, BMW, VOLKSWAGEN, MERCEDES-BENZ, and LAND ROVER. The range is constantly expanding — check availability for your vehicle using the Masuma Parts Finder.
