Many have noticed a change in Masuma cabin filters: when ordering the usual items, you receive not just ordinary barrier filters but something more advanced. Let's talk about the current lineup of Masuma cabin filters with a new antibacterial layer.
ANTIBACTERIAL (BIOFUNCTIONAL) FILTERS
Most classic Masuma dust filters have received an additional biofunctional layer with a natural polyphenol of plant origin. The polyphenol binds and neutralizes allergens captured by the filter, including flower pollen, and inhibits the growth of bacteria and mold.
The biofunctional layer with polyphenol is typically found in premium filters of expensive brands, especially in charcoal filters. Now, it is present in the majority of Masuma cabin filters, and you don't need to overpay for added protection against allergens.
The antibacterial layer of Masuma filters is made from meltblown, a non-woven material composed of extruded microfibers, also used in medical respirators. Meltblown is capable of capturing health-hazardous fine particles of PM2.5 micrometers, including soot, tiny asphalt particles, and particles from car tires.
The electrostatic charge of the filter fibers enhances the attraction of fine particles, further improving air filtration.
CHARCOAL (COMBINED) FILTERS
Masuma charcoal filters now also contain a yellow antibacterial layer with polyphenol. In combination with the activated carbon (charcoal) layer, they provide the most effective air filtration and health protection.
In Masuma charcoal filters a new type of filler is used – coconut activated carbon. It is produced from coconut shells, which contains a high amount of carbon. The shells are crushed, carbonized at a high temperature, and activated with a photocatalyst. The ability to adsorb gasses in this charcoal is 5 times higher than in regular charcoal.
The layer of activated coconut carbon removes unpleasant odors and captures harmful gasses such as sulfur dioxide, hydrocarbons, alcohol vapors, and the most toxic urban gas — nitrogen dioxide, which is dangerous even for healthy people. Nitrogen dioxide irritates mucous membranes, respiratory pathways, and lungs, reduces the blood hemoglobin levels, and increases the risk of various diseases, such as bronchitis. Together with unburned hydrocarbons, nitrogen dioxide forms the basis of urban smog.
The charcoal cabin filter reduces the concentration of nitrogen dioxide in the air by 25–100 times. It is also three times more effective than a regular filter in capturing toxic fumes of isopropanol, the main component of winter washer fluid, the strong odor of which can spoil any trip.
BARRIER (Particulate) FILTERS
In the Masuma lineup, regular barrier filters are still available for certain cars. Their filtering element is also made of non-woven synthetic material, which does not promote bacterial growth, unlike cellulose in paper filters.
An important advantage of barrier cabin filters is low air resistance. They hardly interfere with the operation of the climate control and air circulation, ensuring good ventilation in the cabin. Such filters are also used in the battery ventilation system of hybrids (HV Battery filters).
CORRECT INSTALLATION OF THE CABIN FILTER
To ensure the cabin filter stays unclogged and functions correctly, it's important to install it with the right orientation. Previously, Masuma filters had the marking ↑UP↑ on the ends, indicating the correct position. In the new lineup, a more precise marking ↑AIR FLOW↑ is used, with arrows indicating the direction of the airflow. A similar marking with arrows is typically present in the car, either on the filter cassette or the housing. When installing the filter, make sure the arrows are aligned identically.
The direction of the airflow, batch and part number are indicated directly on the filter material inside the first corrugation. The filter should be installed with the yellow side facing the heater fan and the gray (black) side facing the intake of outdoor air.
Masuma's cabin filter catalogue includes over 300 models. Choose the one that fits your vehicle, remember to replace it regularly, and breathe clean air.
